Nearly a year ago I wrote a song called Come to the Table.
It is based off Psalm 23 because “God prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies”. It came to mind this week as I once again reflected back on the challenging week that I encountered.
Mondays are for murder but Mondays also begin our week and we never know what a day may bring (Proverbs 27:1).
This Monday my week started with my internet going out and Comcast refusing to fix their cable line hanging in the street. It was followed by estimates from adjusters and roofers for my rental home which received significant damage in the wind storm in May. My week ended yesterday with the physical therapist telling me that not only did I have a herniated disc but I may have torn cartilage in my left hip which has been contributing to my chronic injuries on my left side for a few years.
With all those events happening one right after the other within five days span of time, I had to revisit my song this morning and where my life rested. I felt God beckoning me towards His table again to remind me that this life isn’t it for me. One day the table He prepared for me will have no suffering, no tears, no pain, and the saints who led their lives as an example for me will be there with me. We’ll be at the table together.
He also gently reminded me that He has prepared the table for me right now. I have access to sit with Him and have his comfort during this time in my life.
“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
I would encourage you today as you read Psalm 23 to meditate on its words and imagine yourself at God’s table with Him. Because that is where faith is born – at God’s table in God’s presence.
And whatever you are walking through today – maybe it’s heavy and painful and you’re in grief – or maybe you’re in a season of joy. But whatever season you find yourself standing in, it’s a great reminder in Psalm 23 to have your soul refreshed and Come to the Table that’s been waiting for you. God beckons us there to sit with Him. When we do, our souls are refreshed by the bread of life and the blood of the lamb and “we lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1).
