Cowgirl’s Houston Guide: Brunching in Boots

Brunching is serious business in a city that spends the entire month of August doing “Restaurant Weeks“. You would take it seriously too if it was consistently 100 degrees outside and outdoor activities are limited to evenings and mornings to avoid heat stroke. In light of August winding down, I’m a cowgirl who knows her way around the ranch so I rounded up my favorite places to dine for brunch. The ones that aren’t bars are available until the end of August for $25 lunch or brunch too – go check them out and let me know what you think!

Seafood isn’t always on the menu but when it is, this is the place I turn. They have an amazing lobster Benedict that rotates during special times of year. They have classics like pimento cheese fritters and belly hash. They definitely know how to make your taste buds tingle. While they are on the pricier side of brunch menus, they aren’t break the bank either. They have a full cocktail bar, large mimosas carafes with four different juices to choose from, and generous bartenders. They have a very minimal parking lot so prepare to street park or uber. If you’re craving seafood for brunch, look no further!

Down The Street

This bar has it all and I’ve brought it up for my Cowgirl Cocktails too. They have such well priced mimosas and cocktails (around $12) and their food is always good. This crispy fried sandwich with an egg on top is one of my favorites. They also do great salads and charcuterie. This is a spot where I start for brunch and end up staying all day. It speaks a lot for this bar and with the large indoor and outdoor space, weather is a non-issue. Remember the parking lot is small so be careful where you park off Larkin!

Citizens of Montrose

This place has the freshest brunch and you will not leave disappointed. They have a full bar, including pulled espresso so if you order a latte or an espresso martini, you will find it’s worth every sip. Their ingredients are fresh – I’m talking farm fresh. Their mimosa flights are made with fresh juice as well and they even do a “fluffy” juice which you can add to their champagne too. They have ample seating and an outdoor space as well. Parking is tight and you have to get their early because they share their lot with Velvet Taco. So be warned or park in the parking garage across the street! Either way, this is classic place to enjoy mimosas and fresh fresh fresh food with your friends!

Trattoria Sofia

If you love Italian, you will love this place. I’m not sure there is anything they don’t do well if I’m honest. Their brunch is superior and if you’re celebrating your birthday (like I happened to be) then you won’t leave disappointed. Their prices match the quality but it’s well worth cocktails, food, and dessert if you’re going all out for a special occasion or just an excuse to dine with your girls! They have a rotating cocktail menu and last year they did a cognac French 75 that made my heart sing. They have ample parking and valet so come hungry and leave a little more Italian!

Eloise Nichols

I love this place for a girls brunch. It has the three most important things to me – parking garage that you don’t pay for, great cocktails, and even better food. Their menu has something to offer everyone. Their chicken and waffles with shaved green apples is a crowd pleaser and they even do an appetizer of deviled eggs which I love. If you’re looking for a place to spend a few hours and then shop after nearby in River Oaks, they’ve got you covered!

La Lucha

This place does everything well and I mean everything. For brunch, they usually have a handful of fried chicken specials and cocktails. Their fried chicken with biscuits is superb and if you pair it with one of their custom cocktails, you will leave completely satisfied. Their fried shrimp is a great addition to anything you order and they also do tacos like you used to get from Jack-n-the-box after a long night of fun. Except theirs are exquisite and homemade. They also have the flakiest fish and a full bar. Parking is valet and inexpensive. So if you love seafood or fried chicken or you just love a homecooked family style meal, this is your go to spot!

Onion Creek

All the “Creeks” are good but this one off White Oak is my favorite. They have a parking lot but it’s not huge so if you don’t know how to parallel park or you don’t want to brave White Oak, then order an uber. You’ll thank me after you’ve had their $17 mimosa bucket. They also have great bloody mary’s. It’s definitely American food but it’s always on point. They have a large patio and the majority of it is covered. They have some indoor seating but not tons. During the winter months, they have firepits which are great for having a cold beverage and people watching too. All in all, this casual bar is a great spot for a casual brunch!

Better Luck Tomorrow

I would say this is an honorable mention brunch because I don’t think many people know they do it. But this spaghetti sandwich was ridiculously good and as always, their cocktails are sublime. They do a rotating menu for brunch also and the same with their cocktails. But their classics like their Salty Cat and Martini’s are sure to satiate your taste buds for the rest of the day. They have redone their patio and they also have a small inside area. Their parking lot is teeny tiny but you can street park on White Oak or Heights Blvd if needed. It’s free. So if you’re looking for a less traditional brunch and strong drinks, this is a hidden brunch gem that rounds out my brunch recommendations!
